Slide 1: August is National Immunization Awareness Month. In a 2014 survey of primary care physicians, the most common reasons for referring patients to alternate vaccinators were related to patient insurance coverage and financial risks of stocking expensive vaccines in private practice settings. Who are the alternate vaccinators? Alternate vaccinators include pharmacies, retail stores, and public health departments. 75% of responding physicians agreed that pharmacists should share some role in immunization oversight. Increasing access to immunization through alternate vaccinators may help combat low rates of adult immunization.
