Slide 1: August 13 is International Left-Handers Day. A 2016 survey among medical students observed that left-handed students, when compared to their “right” counterparts, were more likely to report: greater utility of their contralateral hand and a disadvantageous impact of their hand dexterity on their specialty selection and training. The students in the study perceived their hand dexterity as a barrier to pursing a surgical specialty, as many instruments and academic environments are adapted toward right-handed trainees.
